Welcome to SOLO TUTTI, a kind of Singers' CPR (Classical Performers' Resource).
This is an idea I've been tossing around in my head for some time. As a freelance musician, living most of my time on the road, it's hard to feel grounded. Life flies fast, social media faster and reliable information faster still. Perhaps its just me, but with all the information at our fingertips it's easy to become overwhelmed. There is so much there, it's hard to know what to ask about those plaguing questions we all face. If we lived a sane, calm life, we might have a shot at accumulating information that is relevant to our very specific needs. But when traveling 10 months of the year? I can barely remember what day of the week it is, much less how I think about retirement!
And so, an idea. What if there was a place where Soloists of all kinds could exchange information, research ideas and strategize for their lives? What if the answers I got were tailored to me and those like me? What if I could interact with those who'd been there and done that and actually knew the questions I'm supposed to be asking for the long haul? They try to teach us how to perform in conservatory, but no one tells us how to build a nest-egg or guard our sanity, let alone find an affordable 2 month sublet. Isn't there a more efficient way to spend my time researching this stuff? Facebook is nice, but it's too distracting to use to accumulate useful info.
Enter this resource. A work in progress. A first step in hopefully having a resource for the several thousand of us in the world that are performing too much and know too little about real-life stuff. A cooperative where we can interact and get real answers. My intention is that each area will be monitored by a professional who has knowledge, not just conjecture. Enough with the speculation and hoping for things to turn out ok when we start to think about retiring! Let's work together and pose the questions and find the answers. Since this site is brand new, those professionals are still not yet lined up and so I simply ask you to start talking. Does your financial accountant want to interact with more potential clients? Does your web designer have some time they can promote themselves (tastefully) and answer some real questions on WTF social media is good for? Invite them here!
Sign up! Become a member. Start giving your insight into the challenges and answers you've found. Help someone younger by showing them they aren't alone. Show someone older the respect they deserve having given themselves to their art. Build up and pay it forward.
We may be soloists, but we are not alone.
